I am inviting participants to take part in a short Photovoice research project exploring how Christians understand land, Indigenous–settler relationships, and our responsibilities to one another.
You do not need to be a photographer. You do not need specialized knowledge about Indigenous issues. You simply need to be willing to pay attention, take some photographs, and reflect with others on what you see.

What To Expect
01 / Guided Facilitation
We will gather twice, on September 30th, to get an overview of the project, learn some photography skills and get your photo prompts. October 14th we will gather to share photographs and engage in a brief discussion of what we notice.
As the researcher, I will share any findings I have with you before they are reported, and you have the opportunity to step out of the project at any time.
02 / A Free Photography Workshop
Learn basic photography principles from an experienced teacher or photography. Use your photographs to speak through your photos: photovoice.
What is Photovoice?
Photovoice is a participatory research method that uses photography and conversation to explore how people understand their lives, communities, and surroundings.
As a participant, you will be invited to spend time noticing the land around you and taking photographs in response to a small number of questions.
The photographs do not need to be beautiful or technically accomplished. They are starting points for conversation.
The important part is what you notice—and what might become visible when we look together.
03 / Time on the Land to Ask Big Questions
In between our gatherings you will spend time on the land answering the questions we posed.
This project may be a good fit for you if you:
identify with a Christian church or Christian faith community;
are interested in questions of reconciliation, land, theology, or Indigenous–settler relationships;
are willing to listen to perspectives that may differ from your own;
can attend both gatherings; and
are willing to spend some time between gatherings taking photographs and reflecting on them.
are over 18 years of age
You do not need previous experience with Indigenous studies, theology, photography, or research.
This is not a test of what you already know.
It is an invitation to notice.
What are we hoping to learn?
The research is not designed to measure whether participants arrive at the “right” conclusions.
I am interested in the process of seeing.
What do we notice when we intentionally attend to the land beneath and around us?
What assumptions become visible?
How does Christian theology shape what we see?
What happens when people look at photographs together and hear one another’s stories?
And might learning to see differently change the way Christians imagine reconciliation and repair?
About the research
This Photovoice project forms part of my PhD dissertation research in Christian ethics.
My research explores how non-Indigenous Christians might develop what I describe as shared sight: ways of seeing land, history, relationship, and responsibility that are attentive to Indigenous perspectives and capable of supporting more substantive forms of repair.
The research brings Christian ethics into conversation with Indigenous theology, land, and participatory community-based research.
Participation is voluntary, and research participants will receive detailed information about consent, confidentiality, the use of photographs, and how the research will be used before participating.
